Ruth Evelyn Kiewel

Ruth Evelyn Kiewel, 96, of Belle Fourche died Thursday, September 5, 2013 at the Belle Fourche Health Care Center.

She was born July 8, 1917 at Freeman, South Dakota to Ole and Hannah (Helgager) Pederson. Ruth married W. James Kiewel September 17, 1940 at the home of her parents in Freeman. The couple farmed near Sioux Falls and Akron before moving to Belle Fourche in 1948. After a house fire, the couple moved to Alzada, Montana until returning to Belle Fourche in 1957.

Ruth has been a member of St. James Lutheran Church since 1957. She worked at Watts Café for several years. She worked at the Belle Fourche Hospital in housekeeping for 20 plus years. Ruth retired from the hospital and began volunteering in the community, which played an important part in her life. She volunteered at the V.F.W. Lady’s Auxiliary, the Senior Citizen Center and her church.

Ruth will be remembered by family and friends for her positive attitude and desire to help others. She considered everyone she met as a new friend and never had a negative thing to say about anyone. Ruth’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought joy to her life. She always sent notes of encouragement and cards, never forgetting birthdays and anniversaries.

She is survived by her daughters, Verla Crago of Rapid City, Grace Strickland of Box Elder and Mavis (Bill) Jeffery of Rapid City; sons, Wally Kiewel of Belle Fourche, Kenny (Donna) Kiewel of Rapid City, Clayton (Jeanette) Kiewel of Gillette, WY and Jim (Karin) Kiewel of Aurora, CO; 21 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ole and Hannah Pederson; husband, James Kiewel; sisters, Myrtle Swensen, Olive Swensen and Violet Jensen; brother, Howard Pederson; grandson, Dusty and great-grandson, Nolan.

Visitation with family present was 4 PM to 7 PM, Sunday, September 8 at Kline Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche and for 1 hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were held 1:00 PM, Monday, September 9 at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche with the Reverend Jeff Otterman officiating. Burial followed at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche.

The family suggests memorials to St. James Lutheran Church.
